As part of the Sydenham Arts Festival, The Philosophy Shop is running two evenings on the Philosophy of Art on the 6th and 9th July at KENT HOUSE LEISURE GARDENS in Sydenham, from 7.p.m. to 9 p.m. (entrance between 91/93 Kent House Road, SE26) Many people accept that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but may also feel very passionately that shakespeare is better than Mills and Boon, and what's more they will try to give reasons why this is so. Join us for an evening of wine, nibbles and arguing about art. This is a relaxed social event: a mixture of discussion and an introduction to some of philosophy's key contributions to this debate. No prior knowledge of philosophy is required. Tickets at a£10 and £8 concessions, if you come through KHLGA tickets are £7. Tickets can be booked either by emailing

A small gathering of KHLGA members who had been involved in the May 2009 Open Day, met on Tuesday 9th June to discuss how it went, where it went wrong, and what could be done to improve the organisation for the next and following years. It was financially successful, with gate takings reaching almost £600. which meant that about two-thirds as many people came as last year. Considering that the day had begun with persistent rain, we felt that this had been a good attendance. The refreshments team leader reported that their day had begun very slowly, but by the end of the day all the food had gone. The flower and vegetable seedlings sold well, and special thanks were due to Sylvia's method, tried for the first time, of raising seedlings from seed, rather than buying in seedlings. Certainly the plants grew well, and she had commenced trading some days prior to the Open Day. The leaflet came in for criticism, arrived late, and it was felt that we might have distributed them better, and that we ought to involve more people in this exercise. Proposals for next year included: buying coloured paper cheaply at boot sales, printing in monotone, a recognisable "symbol" every year, a different sponsor, and not using glossy paper, which it was felt had given a negative 'junk mail' effect. A small team of two people will work on this for the next event. More "children oriented" side shows seemed to be a generally agreed "good thing", and involvement of local schools in organising their own fund raising stalls to be looked into. Suggestion of a Story Teller tent, somewhere relatively quiet. A map to be displayed on the day, showing visitors where they might purchase "Flowers" "Lunch" etc. It was generally agreed we needed to expland the publicity element of the preceding month, writing editorials for the local free press, with pictures. Most important of all, we need to involve more of our Association members in these activities. |

There are some serious hoes around the site - if that's the right word. Some alternatives are: - Mattock
- Chillington hoe
- Zappa (as in Frank) - in Italy
- Pioche - in Mauritius
- Piquant - in Mauritius again, but a slightly different shape
- Earth-cutter - or however you say that in Tamil
The people using them seem to swear by them, and for a long time I've wanted to get hold of one, but the prices I'd seen them at in gardening catalogues seems ridiculous. However, earlier this year I saw one on sale at Sydenham DIY - price £20 - and bought it. |

Thursday and Friday mornings last week we were invaded by Year 3 classes from Alexandra Junior School. With fears of allergies it's impossible to offer the kids anything to taste, but the idea of giving their teachers a strawberry with a slug lurking inside it is much appreciated. The morning starts with squash and jam tarts, and after splitting into groups for tours round the site, finished with planting some beans and then the demonstration hive in the clubhouse, with Peter telling them all about bees. The picture here is from last year, when Peter showed them how he hived a swarm of bees ... a most memorable day. We had to be in the clubhouse this year because of the flooding on the bee keepers' plot.
Thanks to all our vounteers - Anne, Jenny, Margaret, Zoe, Ray andJune.
Update 12 June Hilary Jarvis, head teacher of Alexandra Juniors, wrote to say the children all had a wonderful time, and offer some more photos

We changed the padlocks and Clubhouse door look at the last Rent Day, at a cost of over £600. One tenant lost a key, or had it taken from the lock, left there whilst unloading. Therefore, coded padlocks have been installed. There were several occasions during the recent period when the site was entered and damage done. But still the gates are not treated with the security of the site in mind by some people. Do not give the code to any other person, without the authority of a member of the Committee. Please, please, please, do lock the gates when entering or leaving the site, unless you are certain that there is a person actually driving or walking down the lane, or calling to you to leave the gates open. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO THE REST OF US. |
