Manure Free for All

Here by the clubhouse is where free manure is delivered.  You don't need to ask permission - just barrow it away.

It's not rotted, so the best (but not only) thing to do with it is put it in a compost bin and wait. How long to wait depends on whether you keep it moist, and how warm the weather is, but a few months in general.

You can make your own compost bins - here are some from round the site

Style 1 is just some metal rods pushed in the ground with some tarpaulin like material round them which holds in the manure when filled.

Style 2 are four old pallets held in place with some metal poles as well, and binder twine, with old fertiliser sacks nailed to the inside to keep the contents in.

Styles 3 and 4 are more professional - 3 made from pallets, but nailed, painted and I guess treated with wood preserver; and then 4 the nice plastic conical bins they sell you at garden centres.

The other thing you can do with it is just put it directly over your plot. This won't help things grow in the short run - in fact it's a good way of supressing weeds, or keeping on top of things when taking on a plot that is a bit weedy and you don't have time to tackle. This way you will eventually end up with a more fertile plot, and more easily worked soil.
